Why Do You Want to Build Model Trains?

Picture
The reasons for becoming involved in modelling as a hobby are probably as varied as the numerous individuals who are involved in it.  Every individual will find something that especially appeals to them, depending on interests and skills.  For many modellers it is the creation of a miniature world that fires their imagination.  Many railroaders are most proud of their model train scenery. When planning your first model there are two main approaches.

Firstly you can buy a ‘set’.  Manufacturers supply basic sets which include rolling stock, track and a track mat.  These provide a great basis for the novice to then build on.  You will need to then furnish the set with buildings and accessories.  Direct from the manufacturer the sets start at around eighty pounds and prices range right up to several hundred pounds.  Flexible to an extent, the main disadvantage to these sets is that you are limited in the layout and design.  The initial outlay can be expensive and costs will mount as you add buildings and other features.

For the true modeller the alternative is to build from scratch.  If you have moderate craft skills this will be an exciting project.  There are a number of books on the subject and what you build is your choice.  In terms of satisfaction and originality of design, this is by far the recommended approach.  Drawbacks are that it is time-consuming, and progress may be slow.  Building together with the family will develop your own and your children’s skills.

Take your time, plan thoroughly, be patient and above all ask advice!
